This webquest is aimed at
students in 11th or 12th form without any further
knowledge about Jamaica, but are familiar with the internet. The project is
designed to take three to four weeks, depending on the amount of time available
and the student's fluency in English. One of their main concerns will be to
manage texts in a foreign language and then reproduce the information found in
the different sources to produce some linguistic output themselves.
The project might prove
especially useful in a newly formed class where the students do not know each
other very well and are offered the opportunity to meet on an informal basis
after school. The Jamaican Night at the end of the project brings all of the
students together, explicitly also including family and friends to have a
broader audience for their presentations. Accordingly the work invested before
is task-oriented with a creative touch to it that will lead to individual
results. The students are required to think of ways that they think most
adequate to represent the group's topic.
Apart from training how to do
presentations and expanding the vocabulary, one of the main aims of the
webquest is to develop further intercultural competence. By using Jamaican
webpages they are confronted with a culture different from their own. This
leads to a reflection about how their own culture really is, but is also
supposed to help to understand and accept Jamaican ways of living.
